Thirty years ago, Pyzel Surfboards started the same way a lot of good things on the North Shore do — in a small backyard shaping bay, fueled by a love for surfing and a lot of time in the water. What began as a grassroots operation has grown into one of the most respected surfboard brands in the world, without ever forgetting where it all began.

Jon Pyzel began shaping in the early ’90s, dialing boards in directly off the picturesque waves of the North Shore. This place has always been the ultimate testing ground & from day one, Pyzel boards have been about performance, durability, and helping surfers surf better, no matter the conditions.
A huge part of the progression of Pyzel came from the surfers pushing the boards. The Florence Brothers — John John, Nathan, and Ivan — helped fine-tune designs at the highest level, from fun beach breaks to some of the heaviest waves on the planet. Chargers like Billy Kemper & Mark Healey added another layer, requesting improvements to guns that could handle the big stuff without losing confidence. Just as important were the North Shore locals and everyday surfers who trusted Pyzel boards by putting their hard-earned money into riding them, giving constant feedback and helping shape what we’re building.

As Pyzel grew beyond that original backyard bay, it did it the right way. Today, Pyzel boards are built internationally by that regions local surfers/craftsmen and have acquired some of the top achievements known to surfing, but we’ve stayed committed to doing good business — taking care of our crew, paying livable wages with benefits, working closely with our vendors, and keeping craftsmanship at the core of everything we do.

Giving back has always been part of it too. Over the years, Pyzel has supported nonprofits and community projects that protect our oceans, forests, and the places/people we love. Being a surfboard manufacturer comes with responsibility, and Pyzel takes that seriously. Learn more about our efforts here.
Thirty years in, Pyzel is still a family-run company, led by Jon and Dali Pyzel, right here on the North Shore of Oʻahu. Same values, same mindset — but with better boards now than ever before. Along the way, those boards have been part of victories like World Titles, Triple Crowns, The Eddie, Wave of the Winter, Backdoor Shootout, Vans Pipe Masters, STAB In the Dark, countless historic sessions in the heaviest waves around the globe & much more. We’re proud of where we’ve been, grateful for everyone who’s been part of the journey, and fired up for what’s next!
